I can tell you, this plugin works. I have removed it by now because I've already fixed my "mixed content" errors with https.
My advice, install it and if it works, continue using it while you're fixing the "mixed content" issues. And, when you fixed the real issue, you let go of the plugin.
You don't need to install it for good in your site, and neither of any other plugins if you don't need it anymore.
